Chromium PiP Tweaks

GNOME Shell extension for Brave and other Chromium browsers. Keeps picture-in-picture windows on top, adjusts their opacity, and preserves their initial aspect ratio.

Requires GNOME Shell 50.

Source: git.maz.dev/maz/chromium-pip-tweaks.

Settings

  • Always on top: on by default.
  • Opacity: 50% by default, adjustable from 10% to 100%.
  • Lock aspect ratio: on by default.

Each feature can be turned off independently. Changes apply to open PiP windows.

Build and install

Building requires make, node, glib-compile-schemas, and gnome-extensions. Node is only used to check JavaScript syntax. There are no npm dependencies.

From the repository root:

make pack
gnome-extensions install --force dist/[email protected]

Log out and back in, then enable the extension:

gnome-extensions enable [email protected]

Open its settings:

gnome-extensions prefs [email protected]

After changing the source, rebuild, reinstall, and log out and back in to load the new code. make check runs the syntax and settings-schema checks without packaging.

Usage

Open a video in your browser's Picture in Picture mode. The extension works with separate PiP windows; it cannot affect mini-players embedded in a webpage.

Brave, Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Vivaldi and Opera are recognized. For other Chromium browsers or translated PiP titles, add the browser ID or exact window title in settings. Separate multiple entries with commas.

The aspect-ratio lock uses the window's initial proportions. Reopen PiP to capture a different ratio. Resizing may show a brief correction on Wayland. Fullscreen and maximized windows are exempt from the lock.

Turning off always-on-top restores the window's previous state. If the browser already kept it on top, it will stay that way.

Uninstall
